Tesla has been causing a stir in the automotive industry for years. The latest vehicle from the US manufacturer is now set to revolutionise the transport industry – at least that's the vision of Tesla owner and tech billionaire Elon Musk. Does the semi-trailer truck deliver on its promises? In this article, SpediFux examines whether the semi-truck really is a game changer on the market.
Regardless of the sector, there is no way around Tesla in the vehicle industry. The tech giant's electric cars are still mainly used in passenger transportation. But with the new semi-trailer truck, the company wants to conquer a new market for itself.
In general, the chances of this happening are not bad. Freight and goods transportation are still emission-intensive sectors. Manufacturers have been working on more climate-friendly drive options for some time now. It is therefore a little surprising that Tesla has repeatedly delayed the production and delivery of its electric semitrailer tractor. But now it is coming onto the market after all.
What actually makes an electric truck like Tesla's Semitruck more attractive? The advantages are obvious:
Consequently, electric drives are also gaining ground in logistics. By switching from combustion engines, the industry could take a big step towards climate-friendly goods transportation. And how does Tesla's latest product differ from its competitors?
As usual, Tesla works unconventionally. For anyone familiar with the company's vehicles, this comes as no surprise. It therefore comes as no surprise that the supposed game changer for transporting goods comes with three motors. Two of them are intended for acceleration, while the third is used for long-distance trips on the highway and works particularly efficiently.
Other important key data on the Semitruck:
That sounds impressive. And although Tesla and CEO Musk are still keeping a lid on some of the technical details, other well-known companies are already lining up alongside Pepsi. Major players in the goods transportation sector such as DHL, UPS and FedEx are said to have ordered the Semitruck.
There's no question about it - Tesla is once again causing a stir with its new semi-truck. According to the company, production of the semi-truck is going well in the Gigafactory set up especially for it. There seems to be no shortage of prominent customers. But whether the company is really revolutionizing logistics remains to be seen.
Because not everyone shares the enthusiasm of die-hard Tesla fans. Just recently, a truck driver gave free rein to his criticism in a post on Twitter that went viral. The new design of the cockpit is completely impractical. The numerous digital and technical features would also be more annoying than helpful. On the technical side, there are doubts as to whether the semi-truck is really more efficient than conventional diesel vehicles.
It remains to be seen whether Tesla can prevail against its competitors. Other commercial vehicle manufacturers have also long since entered the electric drive business. The German company Schmitz Cargobull is currently working on a truck with an aerodynamic design similar to the Semitruck and equipped with impressive technology. But competition stimulates business and the US company is undoubtedly giving the industry an important boost. Tesla could possibly create a standard for innovative and emission-neutral transportation vehicles. Perhaps the Semitruck will also roll onto Swiss roads in the future.
